By Georgia O’Connor-Harding FAMILIES ARE being asked to clean up the ornaments at the district’s burial sites – or the memorabilia will be removed. “The district council is in the process of contacting extended family to inform them the adornments do not comply with the cemetery bylaw. People need to rearrange the adornments or the items will be removed,” a district council spokesman said. Under the cemetery bylaw, ornaments may only be placed on the grave beams either surrounding the burial plots or on the beams where the headstone sits. A district council spokesman said in some cases people have put objects on the lawn beside the graves. “This creates a hazard for other cemetery users who could trip on objects and also makes maintaining the cemetery very difficult,” he said. For older burial plots the ornaments may sit on the large grave beams surrounding the burial plot. But for new areas of the cemetery, ornaments may only be placed on the beam next to the headstone – not on the grass in front of the headstone. •Turn to page 4

THE DISTRICT council has made the right call by enforcing the new cemetery bylaw (see page 1). That means some families will be asked to clean up grave sites. That in itself is no easy request, or in this case probably a demand. So district council staff must be applauded for the step they have taken which may not go down too well with some families. The interests of all must be looked after and the council has done that, which hopefully will satisfy most. The rules do mean there is scope for ornaments and other memorabilia as long as they are placed in specific areas. A good result for all, I hope. - Barry Clarke

Maddie’s transplant recovery better than expected

By Emily O’Connell WEST Melton teen Maddie Collins is exceeding expectations by taking her first steps alone, only days after a potentially life-saving kidney transplant. Maddie, 14, and her family were told on January 16 their five-year wait for a kidney match had been found. They flew from Christchurch to Auckland early the following day and Maddie underwent the initial operation at 1pm at Starship Children’s Health. Maddie’s mother Sarah Manson-Collins said hospital staff are “gobsmacked” by her recovery. She said Maddie may be discharged to Ronald McDonald House, Auckland, on Friday. Mrs Manson-Collins said some of the almost $300,000 raised for Maddie will be used to cover transplant expenses and the rest will be saved for future medical costs. She isn’t sure how long this kidney will last but hopes it’s “quite a few years.” Complications following the

But after Maddie was taken out of theatre, she was later rushed back in. Surgeons reopened her and unsuccessfully tried to restitch

kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, had not returned yet. Maddie will now spend a few months in Auckland resting and regaining her strength. She received a kidney transplant from her father Adam Collins five years ago but her body rejected it. With only a two per cent chance, the family did not expect to find another kidney match in New Zealand. They were planning a trip to The John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, United States, which had been looking at new kinds of transplants, to find a match. Mrs Manson-Collins said they feel for the family of the donator who lost their loved one, but they were also really thankful for the donation. “We’re so grateful to the family who has donated their family member’s organs so that our daughter can live. Crackdown on graveside ornaments

•From page 1 It comes after the district council published a list of people buried at Prebbleton Cemetery in a bid to contact next of kin. The list was for burial sites that did not comply with the cemetery bylaw and who the district council had no contacts of next of kin. In 2011, the cemetery bylaw was changed to tighten up what the district council viewed as acceptable and unacceptable for ornaments at burial sites. But the bylaw is now currently being reviewed and has gone out for public consultation – a hearing is to be held on March 8. It said this was because the district council had moved towards lawn cemeteries where the beams are level with the grass. Deputy mayor Malcolm Lyall said some cultures view the decoration around their loved one’s grave site as very special and spend a lot of time there as part of their cultural practices. “We have to draw the line because the decoration does tend to get out of hand at times,” he said. Mr Lyall said ornaments can get blown away and into the mowers maintaining the area causing it to become a hazard and untidy.

Murder victim’s grave on list ONE OF the names listed on the Prebbleton Cemetery list was Lisa Hurrell who was beaten and stabbed to death in her Hornby home in 1998 by Terry Jason Nahi. Nahi was jailed for life in 1999 to the charge of murdering Miss Hurrell, with whom he had been in a stormy and tempestuous relationship since she was 14. He was the father of her three children, but she had a protection order against him at the time. The district council contacted Miss Hurrell’s family asking the bottle and beer cans to be removed from outside of the grave surrounds – but the other ornaments at the site will not be removed. Before the bylaw was changed, Miss Hurrell’s family received permission from the district council to have a concrete edging placed around her burial plot. This was to allow the ornaments and flowers to remain within the concrete edging. Lisa’s mother Carolyn Hurrell said there were some empty beer cans in front of the concrete edging of Lisa’s grave which she has removed. She was relieved the district

The thriller novel in the Jack Reacher series was named the overall most popular book issued between January 1, 2017, to date at district council libraries across Selwyn. The Jack Reacher series is a popular choice with readers with Night School sitting in fourth place for the overall top five adult books issued. District council libraries manager Vicki Carlyon said Child continues to be a worldwide phenomenon so she wasn’t surprised to see two of his thrillers in the top five adult books. The overall top five popular books vary in genre and includes Joanna Trollope’s City of Friends, and children book Liz Pichon’s The Brilliant World of Tom Gates. For younger readers, the top teenage book issued was James Dashner’s young adult postapocalyptic dystopian science fiction novel The Maze Runner. Figures released to Selwyn Times under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act shows $11,000 was spent on milk purchases in the 2016/17 financial year. A further $6000 has been spent on milk in the current financial year to date. District council chief executive David Ward milk is purchased by the district council for various meetings and its staff morning and afternoon breaks. District councillor Pat McEvedy said a lot of visitors come into its Rolleston headquarters and often get a cup of tea. In comparison, the Christchurch City Council spent a larger sum on milk – $80,109 – in the 2016/17 financial year, and to date has spent $46,374 on milk in the current financial year. Meanwhile, the district council spent $3924 on alcohol and $1272 on non-alcoholic beverages between November 2016 and January 2018. Alcohol was provided at various community group meetings and business functions.

Alexander’s quarry comments slammed Claim about dust upsets residents By Emily O’Connell WEEDONS residents are angry Selwyn district councillor Mark Alexander says dust won’t be an issue with the quarry planned for the area. Cr Alexander sent an email to Weedons Residents Association secretary Gary Doyle saying while traffic could an issue, dust wouldn’t be. Cr Alexander’s comments were reported in Selwyn Times last week, which prompted a quick response. Weedons residents Simon Moore and Stephen Bain said they were “horrified” by the councillor’s comments. “Mr Alexander has actually thwarted and obstructed the democratic process and must resign,” Mr Bain told Selwyn Times. Fulton Hogan is planning a quarry on a 170ha section of land on Dawsons, Curraghs and Jones Rds which borders Weedons and Templeton. should not be an issue as any new consents should not allow any dust to cross the quarry’s boundaries.” Cr Alexander told Selwyn Times he was “surprised at the tone” of the responses, but understands residents are upset at the prospect of a quarry. He said the district council is always “neutral and independent” and in a resource consent process, it is like a referee in a sports match.

“District council doesn’t create the rules, we have to impartially manage them,” Cr Alexander said. In the email, he suggested residents’ best way forward was to create “a new, separate, incorporated society to submit against these consent applications.” Cr Alexander also said residents could face legal costs of about $150,000 fighting the resource consent process.

Cr Alexander said: “I’m the only district councillor who has offered any public advise to these residents. So in my view, I am

He has sent emails to Mayor Sam Broughton and Environment Canterbury chairman Steve Lowndes. Cr Chen also plans to talk to Wigram MP Megan Woods, MP Amy Adams, Mayor Lianne Dalziel and other city councillors. “Generally speaking, I’ll do my best on behalf of the Templeton residents to express their concerns regarding this issue,” Cr Chen said. District council planning manager Jesse Burgess said the council has not received a resource consent application from Fulton Hogan yet. In a letter sent to residents near the proposed quarry, Fulton Hogan said it would be there for 25-40 years.

Fund to help Rolleston fire families raises nearly $1700 A PUBLIC relief fund to support families affected by the Knights Rd fire in Rolleston last month has raised nearly $1700. The mayoral relief fund, established by Mayor Sam Broughton, has raised $1675 and received 34 donations. On December 23, a large scrub fire at Knights Rd, forced the evacuations of residents on Hoskyns Rd while three helicopters, 12 fire trucks, eight tankers and three rural units battled the blaze. It also destroyed two houses and badly damaged two sheds. Mr Broughton said the incident is a tragedy for the affected families. “This couldn’t have happened at a worse time – coming right before Christmas. “But we’ve been encouraged by the many offers of help from the community,” he said. Mr Broughton said the district council wants to help the community support those who have been affected, and the

So I am passionate about reducing the amount of plastics we use and throw away – and Lincoln Envirotown Trust is planning to make this one of the projects for 2018. Of course, Lincoln Envirotown has been working on reducing waste, including plastics, since 2006 when we first started, with one of our first actions being the delivery of reusable shopping bags to all Lincoln residents. Last year we were involved in many Selwyn-wide environmental efforts such as The Responsible Business Awards, battery recycling, the Kim Hill Hot Topic (water), KidsFest holiday programme, cleaning up the Liffey Stream and monitoring its water quality, fruit trees in schools and the huge Bioblitz event. A reader has their say on consultation over a new bus service trial between Ellesmere and Christchurch Val McTurk – I live at Leeston and commute to Lincoln most days to take a bus into the city. I would like to see a bus service from Southbridge through Leeston, even if it connected with the Lincoln express bus which leaves Lincoln University at 7.20am each morning. You could return on the express which leaves at approximately 5.20pm each day to Lincoln where a connecting bus through to Leeston/ Southbridge would be available for the workers. Some 20 odd years ago, my late husband drove the bus from Southbridge through to the city via Hornby. He did a number of trips during the day through to Lincoln with the last bus leaving the city at 5.10pm through to Southbridge. It worked well until the service was deleted. Prior to that, a service ran right through to Southbridge from the city. Leeston and Southbridge are growing with triple the

number of people now living in Leeston as opposed to back in the early 1990s when we lived out there. There are numerous new sub divisions going up. I am sure a number of retired people would use a bus service from Southbridge/Leeston to go to Lincoln or to Hornby, which is unable to be reached at the moment by the bus services provided. It goes down Springs Rd and diverts at the roundabout to go down Blenheim Rd and misses out Hornby and Church Corner totally which is silly. Most people from the Leeston/Lincoln area like to shop at Hornby or Church Corner. The service would have to be cost effective and convenient for the passenger, otherwise people will not use the service if it is too expensive.

Honey Droplet New Zealand is in the process of establishing a new shed and a honey packaging and distribution business on Annavale Rd. In 1972, the business was approached by the medical industry and asked if it could create a 100 per cent solid honey lozenge which would not melt in warm weather. About 18 months later, the business created the first solid honey product and, by 1975, had patented its technology around the world, including in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Switzerland. The company manufactures millions of honey lozenges annually. Resource consent for the factory was approved in May 2016. Construction may be in four stages. About 30 full-time equivalent staff are expected to be engaged in an activity at any one time at the shed which will be no larger than 2087m2 when completed. The standard hours of

Toilet upgrade for Castle Hill By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CASTLE HILL is the next on the district council’s list to get new public toilets. Springfield is also in line to get its waste water treatment system upgraded. The district council released an update on toilet provisions across Selwyn covering the current financial year. An upgrade worth $145,000 will be undertaken at the Springfield waste water treatment system while Castle Hill will receive new $166,300 toilets. The upgrades are funded from the district council’s tourism infrastructure fund. About $164,800 has been spent on new toilets at Foster Park, Rolleston, and $144,500 on new toilets at Rolleston Reserve in the current financial year. District council parks and land manager Cameron Warr said it is also looking at options to upgrade the public toilets at the Lincoln Domain. District councillor Grant Miller previously told Selwyn Times a renovation plan is in place for the existing toilets near the corner of Gerald St and Kildare Tce, Lincoln. But Mr Warr said the Lincoln plan is yet to be confirmed.

Activities to keep kids busy A PYJAMA day, mini golf and a trip to Christchurch’s Inflatable World – children have been taking part in a range of fun activities as part of the Busy Bumbles Holiday Programme. Rolleston, Leeston, Lincoln, Templeton and Burnham have been taking part in a new programme of activities as part of the school holidays. The holiday programme began with a mermaids and pirates-themed day before the children travelled into Christchurch to try out their skills at CaddyShack Mini Golf Christchurch. Karen Hulston Our People Former army trainer and mother West Melton resident Karen Hulston has been running a boot camp in the township for the past four years. The former army physical trainer has now launched an online workout in a bid to combat obesity. She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding How did you come to be interested in running boot camps? I was in the New Zealand Army as a physical training instructor. My last posting before I was released, I got posted to Burnham Military Camp. After working at Burnham I met my husband who lives in West Melton. We got married and had a family and we got to a stage where we had so many kids, it was more expensive to put them in full-time childcare than what I was getting paid in the army. I kind of had to pretty much leave the army. It was cheaper for me to look after the kids myself. So

I did leave the army and as soon as I left, I got caught up in the whole raising the kids and my health and fitness went from being amazingly fit – when I was in the army I was pretty much fitter than three quarters of the

army – to being extremely unfit. I couldn’t even run the length of our section without feeling like I was going to fall over and throw up. I guess that realisation made me decide enough was enough. So I designed myself

a programme like one I used to design for the soldiers in the army. I stuck to it. I was quite lucky. I dropped about 25-30kg and started to get my fitness back. I still wasn’t at that amazing fitness level but I just thought

‘I want to help others’. Where did the idea for a boot camp come from? I just randomly advertised I am running a boot camp in 2013. Being in the military, I didn’t know of any other programme to run. I just advertised it locally and I got 17 people – they were all females at the time. Most were mothers like me who had gained weight and were unhealthy. They all achieved these amazing results. It was six weeks. They (asked) are you going to run another boot camp. I guess out of obligation I ran another one because I didn’t want to leave them. Then it came into winter and I managed to talk to the West Melton School who loaned me the hall. From there, it got bigger and bigger. Now I have boot camps of well over 120 people. Why did you decide to set up an online website? The problem is it has got to a stage where it has got so big and I have got so many people on a daily basis I have trained before or they know of me. I really like helping out people and I don’t like saying I don’t have enough time. That is where the idea of doing the online boot camp came from.

wages war on obesity What do you think of the obesity situation in New Zealand? That is one of the biggest factors that motivated me to run these online boot camps. Here in little old West Melton, I can’t help as many people as I would like. Where as the idea popped into my head if I was to do something online that people could do in their own time, then they don’t have excuses like they have got kids at home or husbands working late or moved over to Australia and can’t come to classes. How long were you living an unhealthy lifestyle for? Quite a while – when I took relief from the army in about 2010 maybe 2011. A good two or three years. To be honest, I never told anyone I was in the army. Because I moved to West Melton I was just known as the wife of a husband who had lived here all of his life. I never told anyone I was in the army and was a fitness trainer because, too be honest, I was a bit embarrassed. As soon as someone from playgroup asks you what you used to do and you say a personal trainer in the army, they look you up and down and say ‘really?’ It was definitely a huge rut. A lot

of my clients I have today are very similar. They come to me because they also used to be fit and strong and then something has happened in their life. It must have helped you a lot with training others? I can honestly say, as much as I don’t like to admit it, if I had gone straight from the military to taking civilians for a boot camp I don’t think I would have any clients right now. Because I was so tough when I was in the army. I remember in the army when I was in my early 20s, I had just finished all my training, I remember taking some of the army females that had just had babies and saying there is no excuse for being unfit. I said I cannot believe you cannot do these press-ups and cannot run this far. But it was just because I hadn’t gone through it myself. I remember the administration unit had a lot of females that had just had babies. Now every time I see an administrator in the army, I feel compelled to go up and say I am so sorry. It is not until you go through it yourself you have a sense of how easy it can be to get into that rut. How did you come to be one of the first female

I loved how they got paid to exercise all day and take classes. Everyone would say to me ‘there is no way they would take a female into their core unit’. It was about 1998. I was one of those people when you say ‘no’ that is a challenge and I want

it even more. Because of that, I started training in Waiouru Military Camp. Then I did this selection course. I was the only female out of these amazingly strong and fit males. It was quite intimidating because there were a few men who didn’t want me there and they hadn’t even been selected themselves. At the end of the selection course I was selected. It was a physically gruelling course and I haven’t looked back. There are heaps of females now. It must have been a big change leaving the army? It’s a huge change. For me, my main objective in life was to be in the top 75 per cent because I was a trainer. I put the pressure on myself. I felt I had to be fitter than at least 75 per cent of my class. Quite often I would take a class of 500 to 600 soldiers. You would think if you weren’t fit yourself they wouldn’t listen to what you have to say. I don’t feel that pressure at all now. Milligan had another consistent performance behind the wheel at the weekend to take the championship lead, while Ransley’s season is potentially over after hitting a wall at Teretonga Park. The Prebbleton Jack pair both featured Milligan prominently in the qualifying session and opening race on Saturday. Ransley had secured a rare double pole and went out in the first race keen to retain his position Jaden – but it was not Ransley to be. Brettkelly wins stroke play title in play-off SPORTS HORORATA’S Dominic Brettkelly held his nerve in a sudden death play-off to claim the Canterbury stroke play title at Waitikiri at the weekend. Brettkelly, 18, fired rounds of 71, 70 and 71 to finish tied on 212 with Rangiora’s Kazuma Kobori. Brettkelly needed just two holes to prevail in the play-off. He also became the inaugural winner of the Ron Clement Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the top under-19 player at the tournament. Clement had a very long list of achievements throughout

his career. In particular, he was part of the winning Canterbury team, which included Bob Charles, that won the NZ Freyberg (now known as the NZ men’s interprovincial) in 1957, 1962 and 1965. He also won the Canterbury stroke play title on four occasions. A full field of 96 players contested the Canterbury stroke play tournament. The women’s section was won by Russley’s Juliana Hung with rounds of 75, 69 and 68. Both Brettkelly and Hung were rewarded with 49in televisions for their efforts.

Aquatic Centre admission pricing increase

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre admission prices are set to rise on 1 February 2018 for only the second time since the Centre opened in June 2013. The Council approved the recommended increase following its annual pricing review. The last increase was on 1 January 2016.

Arthur’s Pass gets second recycling station

Aquatic Facilities Manager Kathy Moore says the Centre’s prices have been well researched during the annual review and took into consideration increasing annual costs such as electricity, staffing, pool chemicals, and maintenance.

A second alpine recycling station was installed in Arthur’s Pass in December – just in time for the holidays. The site is located at the campground, adjacent to the public toilets.

“The new pricing is in line with other similar facilities in Canterbury and will enable the Centre to reach its annual revenue target, which aims to achieve a 50/50 cost recovery result with user pays and rates subsidy,” Ms Moore says.

This is a welcome addition to the Village following the opening of the first station that has already diverted over 10 tonnes of recycling from landfill since its installation in February last year. The location of the new station is expected to be particularly useful for recyclables generated by campers and visitors to the area.

The pricing review considered charges at facilities including the Christchurch City Council pools (Jellie Park, Graham Condon, Pioneer), the Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre in Timaru, the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton, and Dudley Pool in Rangiora. The adult fee is increasing from $5.50 to $6, while the cost for a child to swim will increase from $3.20 to $3.50. Students will pay $5, up from $4.50. Family group, memberships and concession card pricing have also increased across the board. All Aqua Fitness classes will be set at a flat $9 cost for casuals. Holders of Gold Card and Community Services cards receive discounted fees. The increases will take effect from Thursday 1 February 2018.

The recycling stations are constructed from modified 20 foot shipping containers and fitted with kea proof flaps to reduce the risk of the inquisitive birds moving the bin contents elsewhere or harming themselves by eating the contents.

Don’t be fooled by the rain! Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has advised that the Restricted Fire Season remains in place in Selwyn despite recent rainfall.

The rain has promoted new growth in some areas of the district which will likely dry out as summer continues, creating a potential fire hazard. With high temperatures expected throughout the remainder of summer, FENZ and the Council are urging all property owners to ensure lawns, paddocks and berms are kept short. Long grass can be grazed or mowed to minimise the risk of it catching fire. When mowing, make sure to do it in the evening or in cooler conditions. Take care with any activities that may produce sparks on hot dry days, and even more so if it is windy – such activities include grinding, welding and even mowing lawns on stony ground. Backyard Critters

BIG: Cosmopolitan ground beetles are one of the most widespread and abundant beetles found in the backyard.

Beetle prowls at night Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us GROUND BEETLES are in the family carabidae and consist of 461 known species in New Zealand, although as many as 800 may be present here. The cosmopolitan ground beetle (laemostenus complanatus) is one of the most widespread species and abundant larger beetles around

your backyard. The accidentally introduced ground beetle is all bluey-black, 13-16mm long, nocturnal and flightless. They are very commonly found in disturbed habitats in compost and under piles of wood or stones. They are not found in native forest areas. Little is known about the

ecology of the species. However, it is thought that both the adults and the larvae are generalist predators of small insects and other invertebrates. In agricultural landscapes, ground beetles are known to be significant predators of aphids and other soft-bodied invertebrates such as slugs.

Colourful way of a fun day out By Georgia O’Connor-Harding IF BEING pelted in brightlycoloured cornflower based paint while manoevring your way through an obstacle course sounds like a fun day out – you are in luck. The Rolleston and Districts Lions Club will hold its first Rolleston Colour Fun Day to raise funds for its organisation. The day involves participants being doused from head to toe in non-toxic colourful powder as they make their way at their own pace through a 2.5km track at Helpet Park. Throughout the course there will be between five to six stations where sponsored companies will blast participants with a specific colour. Rolleston New World and Storage King Rolleston have so far agreed to sponsoring the event. Organiser and the Lion’s club secretary Heather Kissell said the course will include different obstacles and at the end a pit marked out for “ a bit of a paint bonanza”. She wanted to emphasise the day is a fun day and not a colour run. “You can run it if you want to but there is no prizes for being first and I think you miss out

on a lot. It is a day to enjoy with your family,” Mrs Kissell said. The colourful craze is inspired by The Color Run event, a fun run event which first originated in Phoenix, Arizona in 2011 and has since been experienced by 6 million people worldwide. Mrs Kissell said while most people she had spoken to over the age of 40 did not understand the event, those under the age of 40 go “wow that is fantastic”. The event will be limited to 1000 tickets, due to it being the club’s first time running it, Mrs Kissell said. While it has not been decided what the money raised from the day will go to, Mrs Kissell said she like it to go to the community in some way. She said the money may go towards a new ambulance for St John Selwyn Central which the club, along with other neighbouring Selwyn Lions clubs, are in the process of raising funds for. Mrs Kissell said while pushers and prams are fine for the event, bikes and dogs can’t be included. •The Rolleston Colour Fun Day will be held on Sunday, February 18, 11am-3pm at Helpet Park. Lincoln Decision Day helps students choose future 2018 has come around quickly. Maybe school is fast becoming a memory, or perhaps you are looking for a new direction. If you are new to tertiary study, 2018 might even be fees free, giving you the perfect start to your academic study. On 25 January Lincoln University is holding its Decision Day event on campus, from 9am to 4pm. Experts will be available to answer your questions about what to study, help you enrol and discuss your options so that the decision about where to study becomes easier. Lincoln is gearing up for a big year, adding new majors to its popular Commerce degrees as well as new programmes, to make sure it is offering choice to students. Students are now able to include a transferable environmental management major into a commerce degree, ensuring they are ready to meet the environmental challenges they will face in the future. Or they can include Event Management, Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Tourism Management and Water Management, bringing new skills, perspectives and depth to their studies. There are also new separate majors in Supply Chain Management and Global Business in the Bachelor of Commerce as well as new programmes such as the Master of Professional Accounting (CPA) and the Bachelor of Commerce (Agriculture and Professional Accounting), both of which prepare students to qualify as a professional accountants.

There is also the Master of Business in Finance, providing a perspective on finance in New Zealand and international contexts, with reference to sustainability, agribusiness, entrepreneurship, innovation and commercialisation Lincoln still has places in its on-campus student accommodation available, offering an opportunity to enjoy the whole range of student life. New course offerings reflect changes at University Lincoln University is offering a raft of innovative new course majors, in recognition of a desire from students and industry for multi-disciplinary flexibility and the delivery of programmes cognisant of contemporary issues. This year, students will be able to include a transferable environmental major in commerce, agricultural science and tourism degrees, ensuring they ready to meet the environmental challenges they will face in the future. Chief academic officer, Professor Bruce McKenzie, said the move showed Lincoln was “putting a stake in the ground and accepting responsibility for providing our new generations with the academic capacity to create and design solutions in the clash between agriculture, water, tourism and conservation”. “Students studying the Bachelor of Agricultural Science will be able to add breadth with a major in Environmental Management, making Lincoln the only university in the country that has this combination of academic achievement.” These additional course majors come after a ringing endorsement of Lincoln University’s role in the national economy, in the recent Transformation Board report, with Chancellor Steve Smith saying it demonstrates how the university will be

critical to delivering better outcomes in land, food and eco-systems into the future. The report relates optimism for the future of Lincoln, and is enthusiastic about collaboration with Crown Research Institutions, industry bodies and other tertiary institutions. It also aims it towards the rank of top five in the world in agricultural studies. This comes as the university embarks upon a process of identifying core disciplines that better concentrate resources in research and teaching and initiatives – grand challenges confronting society that Lincoln can tackle at a worldclass level through a mix of disciplines and in strong collaboration with members of other institutions. Student surveys indicated there was a realization that “Lincoln University could become known as the best university in the world to study primary industries and environmental protection side-by-side; to find a way to be good at agriculture and protect the environment.” The university is also giving more choice in its commerce offerings by adding separate majors in Supply Chain Management and Global Business. A popular Selwyn pastime The success of the Selwyn Motor Fest last November, reflects the popularity of motoring in the district. Home to a number of motor enthusiasts and collectors, weekends see them heading out in their pride and joy. There plenty of directions in which to go. Fill up at Rolleston and catch a coffee or pick up takeaways before some rural cruising or heading into the city. Your day out might include a meal or coffee and cake at one of the superb eateries in Selwyn. Head west, stopping for a bite to eat at Edendale, West Melton, Darfield, Sheffield or Springfield, followed by a pleasant walk out of the sun at McHugh’s Plantation. Further into the Southern Alps and Porter’s Pass may challenge older vehicles with the need for topping up the radiator at the summit. If you make it over, Arthur’s

Pass offers places to dine along with short and long walks, including round the township where there are interesting history plaques. The scenery is stunning while cheeky Keas hang around town. Lake Coleridge is another option. On the way, stop at Hororata for a famous Butcher Pie. Coleridge township is home to one of New Zealand’s first major power stations (built in 1914), sitting on the northern bank of the Rakaia River. A short drive away, the lake is popular for boating and fishing, as is the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers on Highway 72. This follows the gorges from Amberley to Geraldine cutting through the Selwyn district. Towards the Port Hills, the growing university town of Lincoln is an attractive place to take a stroll with a mix of food options along with the Saturday morning Farmers’ and Craft Market where you can purchase a variety of artisan foods. Tai Tapu also has an established reputation for good food with some lovely garden settings like at The Tap’s sunny courtyard or garden with tree-lined backdrop. It is also a good place for eeling and bird watching. If looking for solitude and a place to rest a while, take a drive along the Kaitorete Spit. Those living in Selwyn are fortunate to be right on the doorstep of Christchurch’s playground with no need to battle traffic to get out of town. Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th January Rangiora A&P Showgrounds Adults $18 and Children under $15 FREE Several local cars will participate in this year’s Trillo Metals Muscle Car Madness show, which starts tomorrow and will run until Sunday at the Rangiora A&P Showgrounds. This will be the 28th time the highly acclaimed Muscle Car Madness show is held with cars on show coming from as far away as Keri Keri in the north and Bluff in the south, along with a good selection from the Selwyn district. Over 1,300 cars will be on display over the weekend, with those exhibited varying from day to day. People who have showable cars are able to display these, simply by paying the admission fee at the gate on the day. [Adults are $18 and children under 15 are now free.] The whole family will be catered for at the Trillo Metals Muscle Car Madness show. The burnout pad action is always very popular while music is a big feature, with the welcome return of The Flyin' Saucers from Melbourne. A great new Auckland band called 'Boom! Boom! Deluxe' will be playing on Saturday, with a total of ten bands playing across the weekend. A retro beauty competition for all ages will also be held early on Saturday afternoon, presented by Kabella Baby. Hedges give a garden impact A hedge offers simplicity yet impact. It is an affordable alternative to erecting a fence and gives privacy. Hedges create a wall of green that is aesthetically attractive, easy to maintain and a draw card for bringing birds into the garden. The downside of hedges is the regular maintenance they require to retain their shape and avoid an untidy look. A wellkept hedge will provide a year round green outlook while also offering a show of brilliant colour if flowering shrubs are its basis. It can also provide a backdrop to other plants in the garden. Hedge planting may be used to divide a garden divider perhaps creating rooms that give it a sense of mystery or excitement, or to add formality to a garden. It is also an ideal way to achieve a shelter break or to absorb noise if near a busy road.

There are many suitable plants suitable for shaping into a hedgerow, from low growers to taller shrubs or trees with Buxus one of the most popular plants for short box hedging lower than 1.5 metres. Other suitable plants include Lonicera Nitida (box honeysuckle), which is ideal where the garden gets full sun; the attractive white flowered Mexican Orange Blossom; the lovely pink flowering Escallonia; and for an edible hedge, the delicious sunloving Chilean Guavas. Taller plants that make good hedges include: Photinia the plant that has brilliant red new leaf growth and white flowers; beautiful flowering Camellias; Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese Laurel); the fragrant Osmanthus; Feijoas; or Thujas, more commonly known as Conifers. New Zealand natives ideal for hedges include: varieties of Coprosma, which come in different colours and leaf patterns; Corokia, which has a lovely yellow flower in spring turning to attractive berries in summer. Taller native options include: the very popular Griselinia (Kapuka); a wide selection of fast growing Pittosporums; Olearia (Daisy Bush), which does not mind poor soil; and Totara. Match the choice of plants, based on the

maximum height it grows, to the height you want your hedge to be. The number of plants needed to establish a hedge will depend on the species as well as how dense and quickly they grow. To give the plants a good start dig over the ground then add in compost giving plenty of water as you put in the plants and afterwards to help them get established. Maintaining a hedge is easy with pruning loppers, hedge shears or powered hedge

trimmers, which are ideal especially for large or established hedges. Pruning regularly will also help thicken up the hedge while allowing you to shape it to the look you desire. Rule of thumb is: prune back a third of each hedge plant annually to encourage a leafy bushy look rather than a woody hedgerow. Hedges can make a garden while also offering the chance for colour and even fruit.

Making your own compost Composting is easy and a great way to transform garden waste and kitchen scraps into nutrient rich material that can be spread around the garden. Whether you purchase a compost tumbler or bin, construct a wooden structure perhaps using recycled pallets or simply create a pile in an out of the way place in your garden, the exercise of making compost can involve as little or as much work as you desire. For best results, the object is to create layers of organic materials such as grass and pruned clippings, leaves and household scraps, sprinkling the odd thin layer of soil to help the compost along. Even a less scientific approach will produce reasonable mulch if left for a sufficient period of time to break down. Household waste that can be composted includes: kitchen scraps; coffee grinds; teabags; small amounts of dairy product; paper towels;

The following method can be used for making compost: 1. Layer pruned branches and twigs over the bottom of the compost area, directly onto the soil. 2. Distribute a layer of wet and dry organic materials and kitchen scraps over the branches and twigs. 4. Spread over an occasional layer of manure, blood and bone, or seaweed, adding lime if there is a large amount of acidic material like fruit scraps or pine needles. 5. Cover the compost with an old rug or blanket to retain the heat and water from time to time. A worm farm is ideal for composting kitchen scraps. 6. If using an enclosed container, it is good to turn the mix weekly. shredded paper, newspaper or cardboard; As kitchen scraps can attract vermin, it cooked pasta and rice; dust; stale bread and is better to compost these in an enclosed cereal; nutshells; hair and pet fur; ash; and old container or via a worm farm. The latter will wool or 100% cotton items. provide a wonderful nutrient rich, liquid manure. Do not feed the worms peelings and scraps from onion, citrus, dairy products, garlic, greasy meat, fat, spicy food, processed foods like sauces and canned food, any green waste that has been sprayed with pesticides or weed killer, non-biodegradable items, or poisonous plants. Items such as meat, pet litter, seed heads, green waste that has been sprayed with herbicides or pesticides, and plants that could sprout, are also better not composted and instead put in the red bin. Composting household waste reduces pressure on landfill sites and is easy to make, providing you with lots of free mulch for your garden. Add the green matter and let the tiger worms do the rest.

How can I stop my carrots from being all foliage and no carrot?

Carrots can be a tricky one sometimes, firstly, make sure you are planting them directly into the garden as seeds. They hate being transplanted, and therefore growth can suffer because of this. The type of soil should be light and open to allow the roots to grow, this may be helped by adding compost. Veggie Garden Mix or Garden Mix are great options for growing in. Once they start to grow, thin any that are crowding the space of another carrot, as well as any small or scrawny ones. This will give your healthier, bigger plants more space to grow. If they are too close together, this will restrict their growth. As carrots are a root crop, they need a fertiliser that is suited to the growth needs of these types of plants. Superphosphate is great for theses, and other root crops. Water is also an important aspect of growing any type of vegetable. Make sure you establish a regular watering pattern, giving them a good soak every few days.

MILITARY EXERCISE HIGH EXPLOSIVES TRAINING/NIGHT FIRING 29 JAN – 14 FEB 2018 The general public is to be advised that a NZ Army Exercise will be conducted in the West Melton Rifle Range (WMRR) area over the period 29 Jan – 13 Feb 2018 The exercise will involve personnel of the 2/1 Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment from the 1 (NZ) Brigade, Burnham. The exercise will involve up to 40 personnel. A night shoot will be conduct on the 01 Feb and again on the 09 Feb 2018, all firing will be finished no later than 10pm. Training will involve soldiers using High Explosives (HE) grenades around the WMRR area. The training with grenades will start at 10 am and finish no later than 4 pm on the 05 Feb and again on the 13 Feb 2018.

Almost a lighting revolution The emergence of LED lighting might almost be mooted a revolution in lighting with them offering brighter, quicker, more cost effective light. While an initial higher outlay, long-term power savings make LEDs more economic with the adage ‘what you pay for is, what you get’ meaning the higher the quality the more benefits. LEDs usually return their initial cost in around a year through power savings while lasting over ten years, especially when a quality fitting. The overall cost of LED lighting is lower than when first introduced to the market. With its benefits much greater, incandescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps and halogen lighting are all becoming a thing of the past. LED lighting is five to six times brighter than its incandescent equivalent and with a narrower beam angle the light is more focussed. Juice Electrical’s Greg Horton recommends LEDs due to their efficiency. “It’s unlikely you’ll need to change an LED fitting for 10-20 years as they last so much longer,” advises Greg. While LED lighting may add $500$1,500 more to the cost of an average house build, the extra cost is future focussed as they use a tenth of the

power for lighting. LED fittings are also becoming cheaper and there are now LED bulbs that can be retrofitted into older light fittings. “The way in which an LED diode is manufactured and the luminescent moulded together determines its quality,” explains Greg. There are other benefits in choosing better quality LEDs too. With high quality ICF LED lights, pink batt insulation can be closed and butted so it sits right beside and over the top of the LED. This was not the case with other lighting methods where insulation had to be cut away from the light fitting as it would heat up posing a fire hazard. With insulation able to cover high quality LED lights, more heat is retained in the home. However a word of warning, some LEDs still require insulation to be cut around them so it is essential you get advice from an electrician first. This is also something a building inspector will check if a new home is being constructed or an alteration requiring building consent is undertaken. LEDs are also ideal if changing a light fitting is a mission, such as with high ceilings and above stairs.

Benefits of LED lighting: • Light output is excellent. • LED bulbs are very efficient, using up to 85% less electricity than incandescent bulbs. • LED bulbs last longer than other lighting forms. • Efficient use of electricity and longer life means less impact on the environment. • The LED’s lifespan is not affected by frequently being turned off and on.

Negatives of LED lighting: • This form of lighting is initially more expensive. • Many older dimmers will not work with LED light bulbs making it more feasible to change the complete light fitting to an LED one, something Greg recommends as they have a much longer life span.
